CALENDAR
Lois Hornbostel & Ehukai Teves (Ghost Peppers duo)
Lois and Ehukai's concerts include many styles of string music, from Southern Appalachian to World Music to Rock. You'll find details on our PERFORMANCES page, along with videos of our music.
During the 2020-2021 COVID-19 epidemic, musicians and their venues have followed safe-distancing practices. This postponed in-person events while new "virtual" on-line events were formed that have made it possible for musicians and audiences both to carry on safely with music. As COVID risks decrease, we'll all benefit in continuing the new "virtual" opportunities and returning to some of the beautiful places (See America by Dulcimer) for music events and the in-person hugs of our friends.
We'll continue on-line festivals (see below), private lessons and classes in playing Mountain Dulcimer, Ukulele, and Electric Bass. To book us or find out more, just visit our Contact Us page on this website.

NORTH GEORGIA FOOTHILLS "VIRTUAL" FALL FESTIVAL
WWW.NGFDA.COM./2020VIRTUAL
Lois and Ehukai “virtually” taught some 200 students in mountain dulcimer and ukulele classes. The NGFDA Fall Festival has long been a favorite event of dulcimer players. The one-hour classes using the free "Zoom" program were very popular. Students could take them for only $11 each and could attend in the comfort of their own homes - even if they live in a different part of the world. Musicians learned new on-line skills, and it helped us make our livings during this difficult time. Thanks to everyone for this!
"THE GHOST PEPPERS" We (Lois and Ehukai) have a new performing duo name ... "THE GHOST PEPPERS"! Ehukai loves to grow these peppers, among the hottest in the world. Our music is sometimes "hot" and sometimes dramatic, lyrical, or traditional. Audiences tell us it's always enjoyable. Ehukai continues to write wonderful historical and imaginative songs, with Lois collaborating. See our new "Ghost Peppers - Live from Bryson City" CD, available at our MUSIC STORE page of this web site!
Sat., Jan. 26, 2019, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Featuring music by Hawaii’s Ehukai Teves & Lois Hornbostel (THE GHOST PEPPERS) playing Hawaiian and party music. Mountain Layers is adding Hawaiian touches to the brewery, libations and food. If you want to deck yourself out in Hawaiian style, Lois will have for sale some of her In-Decent Attire Aloha shirts!

PLAYING IN CHARMING BRYSON CITY! Lois and Ehukai have the honor of playing for the public in their hometown of Bryson City in the North Carolina Smoky Mountains. They are presented by the Swain County Chamber of Commerce, who promote and present the local musicians. The setting is the beautiful Swain County Heritage Museum, and Lois and Ehukai play some Fridays and Saturdays (not all) from 6-8 p.m. Friendly Bryson City is in one of the country's most beautiful scenic areas and is rich in culture and outdoor activities. If you're planning on a visit here, check with Lois Hornbostel's Facebook page to see when "The Ghost Peppers" are playing at the Museum.
THE EXCITING FIDDLE CONVENTIONS! You may have noticed that the number of our mountain dulcimer playing, singing and other instrument championships continues to grow. These began when Ehukai moved to Bryson City. Lois wanted Ehukai to experience the stunning "motherlode" of old-time Southern Appalachian music in Southwestern Virginia, northern North Carolina, and eastern Tennessee. Each summer "fiddle conventions" draw some of the country's finest old-time and bluegrass musicians, who jam and compete for championships in fiddle, banjo, guitar, dulcimer, autoharp and more. Lois and Ehukai gain great musical inspiration from the outstanding musicians they meet and, in turn, have made many more aware of the beauty and versatility of mountain dulcimers. These events are represented in the red column at the left, and we will be attending them through September of 2018.
Lois & Ehukai are proud to support the Great Smoky Mountains National Park through their participation helping to lead the traditional old-time jams at the Oconaluftee Visitor's Center in Cherokee, NC. 1st Sat. each month at 1 p.m. and additional jam 3rd Sat. in summer months. Come by and listen or if you play old-time music bring an instrument.

SOME WORLD TRAVELS!
We spent September in Hawaii, concertized there, and jammed with Ehukai's "To the Max" bandmates - some of Hawaii's best musicians. Then in early October it was home to North Carolina, and to Lafayette, LA, for the wonderful Festivals Acadiens. We got to dance at legendary zydeco dance club, Slim's Y-Ki-Ki, to the music of Jeffery Broussard & D'Jalma Garnier at Millie Broussard's birthday party. Life is wonderful and we are grateful!
Sun., June 7, 2015. Berea, KY. JEAN RITCHIE MEMORIAL SERVICE, Union Church.
Ehukai Teves & Lois Hornbostel had the honor of providing the mountain dulcimer music for the 2-hour reception at this beautiful service that honored Jean well. Both Ehukai and Lois were personal friends with Jean - Lois through working at dulcimer events with her, and Ehukai as a friend who helped her move to Berea and learned music from her. Thanks, Peter & Amy Pickow, Jon Pickow, the Ritchie family and Union Church. Video of Jean Ritchie Memorial at Union Church: https://youtu.be/iJ1rBQQBT7o or click on 4th photo below.
Jean Ritchie was our much loved "Mountain Dulcimer Queen." She passed away June 1 at the age of 92. This talented, loving and beautiful woman received many national awards for her musicianship, song collecting, the songs she wrote, and for her writing. Raised in the small mountain town of Viper, KY, Jean became a fine scholar, winning a Fulbright Scholarship to research in the British Isles the roots of her family’s Southern Appalachian music. While working as a social worker in New York City Jean musical talents were discovered, and she became nationally known for her beautiful voice and music, and in the process popularized the Southern Appalachian mountain dulcimer. Most of us would not have played the instrument if not for this. We loved Jean and love our memories of her. Here is a video about her: https://youtu.be/8NeqV-hx_88

RETURNING TO THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN DULCIMER’S ROOTS!
Lois and Ehukai have taken time recently to travel to some of the Southern Appalachian region's great fiddle conventions. In the past, these events have given Lois an authentic education in playing exciting old-time fiddle tunes. Her Mel Bay books DULCIMER FIDDLE TUNES and AMERICAN FIDDLE TUNES FOR MOUNTAIN DULCIMER contain dulcimer arrangements of these tunes, and she teaches them to her students. Our goals are to learn new music and to present the mountain dulcimer to old-time musicians and general public, played the best we can as practiced, longtime professional musicians. In the process, Ehukai has won 3 dulcimer championships and Lois has won another 3. (See 'What's New' column.)
